Wedding Cake Stand Ideas and Tips

Choosing a wedding cake is a personal decision for the bride and groom. The choice reflects their styles and tastes (flavor and otherwise). Displaying the special cake can be just as important: the table, the linen, the cake cutter, and of course, the cake stand. As simple as a cake stand sounds, there are actually many styles even in simple pedestals. A simple cake with an outstanding stand or vice versa can have a strong visual impact.

Traditional

The traditional wedding cake and stand is three cake layers, one on top of the other, all three on a stand that looks like another layer of cake. The stand is the same shape as the cake layers and can be any color. Tiered cake stands that keep the cake layers on separate tiers can be very elegant and decorative. Traditional cake stands are easy to find online.

Pedestals

Pedestal cake stands are reminiscent of pies and cakes sitting on a dining room table or in the bakery. These cake stands can be a fun way to add design or color to a simple cake as they range in colors, designs, details and diameter. Some brides choose multiple cakes on a variety of cake stands. These can be found in department stores, thrift stores, antique stores, or even borrowed from friends and family.

Cupcakes

Having cupcakes instead of a wedding cake is becoming more common at weddings. Because of this, cupcake towers are increasing in popularity and availability. Cupcake stands can be tiers with spots for individual cupcakes or even a fake cake made out of cardboard that leaves room for cupcakes on the outside.

Funky

For couples choosing a whimsical wedding and cake, something completely unexpected can be fun. For example, a large Frisbee, an upside-down basket, or a stand made out of wood. For a wedding with a beach party theme, a surfboard, boogie board or skim board could act as the cake stand. For a garden wedding, a piece of slate can add flair and character.

Consider large, low-profile bowls, antique plates, hand-painted plates, or even a glass tray with decorative feet. Internet-based stores such as etsy.com can provide even more inspiration for cake stands.
