Simple Do It Yourself Wedding Cake Design
Simple Do It Yourself Wedding Cake Design
Getting married can be expensive. To have a beautiful ceremony without the cost of a big wedding, many brides are considering do-it-yourself options. One easy area for the do-it yourself bride is the wedding cake design. If you are one of those brides looking to create your own wedding cake, these easy options will get you started.
Satellite Cakes
Instead of layering your wedding cake tiers on themselves, consider placing each tier on a separate cake stand. These cakes, known as satellite cakes, can be placed around the buffet table or scattered over their own cake table around a fountain or decorative flowers for an interesting effect. The smallest tier can be set aside for your one-year wedding cake, while the larger tiers can be cut into for guests to enjoy. If you have a small wedding, your cake can take on the appearance of a larger cake by decorating layers of Styrofoam with icing to take on the appearance of large cake pieces. These large Styrofoam cake layers can be discarded once the wedding is over, with no food going to waste.
Cupcakes
For a unique look in small wedding cakes, consider a bridal cupcake stand rather than a large wedding cake. These stands can be made by cutting out Styrofoam rounds, covering them in foil or bridal wrapping paper and edging them in ribbon. Each round can be stacked on top of another, using wedding cake decorating pillars. Then the successive rounds can be filled with bridal cupcakes or petit fours. For a decorative effect, a one-year bridal cake may be placed at the topmost tier. This mini cake can be decorated with flowers, or the traditional bride and groom wedding cake topper. For another variation on the cupcake stand, use boxes of varying sizes covered in foil or paper. Stack each box to form a tier of the stand. Your finished stand will look like a cake itself. The cake effect is heightened when each tier is covered in cupcakes.
"Hidden" Cake
Another alternative for the wedding cake is to create your own, or rent a "fake cake." These cakes are often made of Styrofoam or wood and covered with rolled fondant icing, which can be purchased pre-rolled and pre-cut from a hobby or craft store. For an actual edible wedding cake, most brides and grooms have a sheet cake hidden away that they have cut and distributed to guests.
