1. Find and purchase the supplies you will need. Basic supplies are needed for any kind of cake such as frosting, cake ingredients, a recipe, and the tools you will need to decorate it. Your supply list will depend on what you will be doing with the cake. Make sure you have plenty of the essentials so that you do not run out in the middle of the project.
2. Research different styles of wedding cakes and choose the appropriate one for the couple. How you design the cake and how big you make it will all depend on how many people will be eating it and what style and theme the bride and groom want it to be. Wedding cakes take a lot of work but they usually are quite simple and elegant looking.
3. Bake the cake. You can use basic boxed cake mixes or use one of the many recipes available. What you will use will also depend on what the bride and groom have chosen. Use sturdy metal baking pans and cook them to the recipes recommendation. You can use a cake leveler once you cake is baked so that you have an even surface for stacked construction.
4. Frost the cake or cover it with fondue. Once the cake has completely cooled and you have leveled it, it is time to frost the cake. Frosting will taste better, but the fondue will give it a smooth and silky look. You can still add a small thin layer of frosting under the fondue to help with the taste as well as help it stick to the cake.
5. Add frosted or fondue decorations. Now that the cake is assembled and you have it frosted, it is time to start decorating. Some common decorations you could put on the wedding cake would be flowers and a lace design. If you are nervous about the decorations you are about to put on the cake, practice on a board before you work on the cake.
6. Add any floral decorations or embellishments to finish your cake. The embellishments that you would want to add at a later time would be any plastic embellishments or florals. The reason why you would want to wait till the last minute is because they can fall off.
