Christmas Wedding Cake Ideas
A wedding during the Christmas season often has a Christmas theme, which means the choices for your wedding cake may seem a little narrow. This does not mean that the wedding cake cannot be a beautiful masterpiece perfect for pictures. Try to keep the cake in line with the rest of the wedding theme, whether it be elegant or casual.
Presents
A great design that can be dressed up for an elegant wedding or kept casual is a present. Go with any of the shapes you like the best: Squares, circles or even hexagons will work with this design. A simple stacked wedding cake with fondant will be transformed into a perfect Christmas present buy using fondant as a ribbon and a bow on top. For a more casual look, try having each layer done in a different color fondant with stripes or polka dots. If you are having an elegant wedding, go with classic colors and do each layer in the same color: cream colored fondant on the cake and then a dark Christmas green as the ribbon and bow.
Holiday Foliage
Flowers on wedding cakes are a classic option. For a Christmas wedding when spring flowers and lilies just do not fit into the season, look for rich, vibrant reds and greens. There is always the option of poinsettias to decorate a cake, and because these flowers can be large, fewer can be used---which could mean some savings. Although real poinsettias can be used, there is a stigma associated with the safety of ingesting these flowers, so it may be a good idea to go with silk or gum paste versions. There are other options though, such as holly berries and ivy. Use the ivy to cascade down the tiers of the cake with bunches of berries on the top and possibly on some of the other tiers. Another option is to decorate the cake with grapes (real or marzipan) and cover them with sugar.
Snowscape
A great concept for white cake is to make a snowscape. Go with a white buttercream frosting (unless it is necessary for the design, there is no need for fondant in the colder seasons) to cover the whole cake. Then take coconut flakes and cover the whole cake to give it dimension and texture. To add some sparkle, you can sprinkle granulated sugar with the coconut flakes, which will catch the light and make the snow sparkle. For a topper, go with a Christmas tree, which can be a cookie that is decorated elegantly.
