How to Make a Square Wedding Cake
ehow

Square wedding cakes offer an unusual twist on the traditional round wedding cake. Square cakes can be placed in tiers, similar to round cakes, or placed at different angles to provide an interesting look. While many bakeries and professionals who make wedding cakes can create a square wedding cake for a couple, square wedding cakes can also be accomplished at home with a little extra effort and preparation.

Instructions
Things You'll Need

Square baking pans
Batter ingredients
Frosting ingredients
Spatula
Butter knife
Oven
Cooling racks
Freezer
Cake platter

1
Determine how large the cake needs to be to serve the number of guests at the wedding and purchase square baking pans accordingly. For instance, to serve 120 guests, purchase two 12-inch, two 9-inch and two 6-inch square cake pans to create the tiers. Find a serving-size chart online. Remember that it is always best to have a larger cake with extra cake left over than to make a cake that is too small and cannot feed all of the wedding guests.

2
Select the type of cake you wish to have, such as vanilla, chocolate or carrot. Wedding cake recipes can be found in cookbooks or online. Make the batter according to the recipe of your choice and pour evenly into the various baking pans.

3
Bake each pan individually in the oven according to the time given in the recipe. Watch the pans closely and remove them from the oven when lightly brown and when an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

4
Set the pans on a cooling rack and allow to cool completely. Once cool, loosen the edges of the cake from the pan by inserting and slowly moving a butter knife between the cake and the edges of the pan. Place a cooling rack on top of the cake pan and gently flip it over to remove the cake from the pans. Once the cake has been removed from the pan, set the cake on a large, clean surface to frost. Evenly spread icing over the tops and sides of the layers with a butter knife or a small plastic spatula. Icing recipes can be found in cookbooks or online.

5
Place the iced tiers in a freezer for approximately 30 minutes to allow the frosting to set and then remove from the freezer. Consider how you want to place the tiers for the final presentation, such as the tiers stacked evenly or set at different angles. Photos of examples of square wedding cakes are available online.

6
Carefully arrange the layers in the final position on a surface, such as a large platter or board, that can be moved to the wedding location, with the largest tier on the bottom, the medium tier in the middle, and the smallest tier on the bottom. You may wish to have someone help you lift and set the tiers in place.

7
Decorate the tiers with piped icing or other decorations, which can be purchased at most baking stores or craft supply stores.
