Ideas on Square Wedding Cakes
Square wedding cakes are seemingly less traditional, but they have become a modern touch. These cakes can be stacked and decorated, making a grand statement to all of your guests.
Gift Wrapped
A square wedding cake can easily resemble a gift box. The cake can be covered fondant for a satin appearance. When several layers are stacked together, the cake appears as a a tower of gift boxes. The top layer can have a bow to mimic a gift. The bow can either be enormous and elaborate or small and simple. The base of each layer can be decorated with beads, frosting or fondant.
Unusual Shapes
A square cake can take on a non-traditional appearance. A topsy-turvy cake is designed to appear as if it is falling over. Each layer is stabilized inside the structure, but the guests cannot see the inner workings.
A staggered cake can take on several formats. These cakes are not stacked directly in the center of each other. They are turned so the bottom layer will appear as a square and the next layer will appear as a diamond. The cakes can also be slightly turned with each layer to create a spinning effect.
Traditional Square Wedding Cakes
Traditional square wedding cakes are typically white with the decorations in multiple colors. Try matching the accent pieces in the cake to the wedding party of the reception decorations. These decorations can be ribbons, flowers or small vertical stripes on every other layer.
Another great accent on a traditional cake is known as quilting. The quilt pattern is made with a cake-decorating tool. Intersecting diagonal lines are made across the top and sides of the cake. Small shiny edible beads can be placed in the intersection of the quilt patterns to a more elegant look.
